Aikido is a little know but highly scientific series of techniques dealing with self-defence that dates back to the Kamakura Period in Japan. For 800 years it has remained a jealously guarded secret taught only to a select few of the Japanese nobility, and only in recent times has the silence surrounding it been broken. Now there are two schools in Tokyo teaching the art of Aikido, and branches are flourishing in other cities of Japan. Fundamentally, the techniques of Aikido are similar to those used in Judo-but with one distinction. Judo is governed by a code of regulations designed to test skill in sporting contest; Aikido is bounded by no such restrictions and is not classified a sport. Regulated contests cannot be held: only exhibitions. Aikido is, in short, the perfect form of emergency self-defence and, correctly used, is a simple and very dangerous weapon.
