Abstract | Contents
The hanbo is a modern defensive weapon offering a practical method of self-defense. Using a Hanbo, one can render an attacker powerless, through proven self-defense techniques designed for maximum effectiveness. With practice, Hanbo can be mastered by anyone, regardless of age, sex, or physical condition. These techniques can be performed using a walking stick or umbrella, making this an effective means of self-defense in any setting. The techniques outlined in this book were influenced from a number of martial arts disciplines. They incorporate the fluidity and connective energy of Aikido, and the dynamics of Okinawan Karate's Kobu-jutsu. John C. Goss Jr. has been a martial arts pracitioner for over 35 years. He holds the rank of Rokudan (6th degree black belt) and Shihan in Korindo Aikido. He is currently recognized as the highest raning and only active Korindo Aikido instructor in the United States. Mr. Goss was introduced to the Hanbo-jutsu in 1968. He began his training in Hanbo-jutsu through Okinawan Karate's Kobu-jutsu. In 1974 he was introduced to a different system of Hanbo through the weapons work of Korindo Aikido. In 1991 he received his teaching certification from Mr. Dennis Mikata Sensei of Korindo.
